Thanks all...too late now. I hit the button and they are on there way. I have had a nice affair with my DW's and worst case scenario ..I'll get another set someday. I'll be sure and post something once I've leaned into them after a week or two

Congrats on your new kit sjj. There's nothing more exciting than a new kit. Post some pics and clips when you get it.

Sorry for the late post. I guess Randy answered your question. I usually get the edges done on my own regarding my drums. Weckl said the oaks are a very "live" drum, and I too thought they had a little too much resonance for my tastes. I tried different heads on all the kits which made a huge difference to my ears from the factory stock Yammy heads. I like the ambassador/emporer combo. Seemed to tame the drums a little for more focused sound.

Weckl played Oaks at his last clinic here. They sounded great but they were going through all his outboard gear; and Weckl will always sound great (and he will take the extra hour to tweak a tom perfectly to his taste). But trying them by myself, I found they were very loud and raw.

Like JM, for Yams, I think the ultimate combination would be Birch toms/Maple kick.

I have always heard Maple for live, Birch for recording. Any opinions on if you have to both with one kit......maple or birch?

GoMan is correct about my question. I am looking to buy a new kit and was leaning towards maple but heard birch was better for recording. My current kit is neither and I can only buy one new one so I wasn't sure which was worse.....using birch for live or maple for recording (that sure sounds like a backwards approach!!).
